WORKING APPITUDE TEST (W.A.T.)

WAT 1

In order to be awarded the WAT 1 title, the dogs must undertake the following tests and have a favorable outcome:

Behavior towards friendly strangers.
The dog must remain calm in front of friendly persons. On indication of the steward, the handler walks the dog with a loosened leash and without giving orders. As friendly strangers walk by, the dog must remain calm; he should also remain calm when the handler approaches or is approached by strangers in order to shake their hand, to ask information etc... The dog however should not be touched. Care must be taken that during this exercise everything is handled as casual as possible.

Indifference to firearm noise.
For each dog, a pistol is fired twice in rapid succession from a distance of approximately 20 meters. The exercise is executed with the dog held to a loosened leash of approximately 2 meters of length.

Defense of the handler.
A decoy, armed with a flexible stick is placed behind a blind (hiding place). The handler, with the dog on leash (the leash is approximately 5 meters long) but held to a length of approximately 1 meter, proceeds ahead according to the instructions given by the steward. A stake is placed at a distance of approximately 10 meters from where the decoy is hiding, and, as the dog and handler reach the stake they stop. At the same time, upon orders given by the steward, the decoy exits from the blind and threatens the handler and dog. The handler, remains still by the stake, but incites the dog to face the threat by loosening the leash, therefore allowing the dog to approach the decoy/aggressor. The dog must react immediately and energetically defend its handler. There should never be contact between the decoy and the dog. This exercise is interrupted by the steward when the dog has demonstrated with its reaction readiness, its real defense attitude. The dog that shows indifference, shyness or manifests fear should not be given a passing grade.

WAT 2

In order to be awarded WAT 2, the dogs must be subjected, with favorable outcome, to the following exercises:

Behavior towards friendly strangers (Same as WAT 1).

Indifference to firearm (Same as WAT 1).

When confronted with this threat, the handler must immediately let the dog free and urge it to attack. The dog must immediately and decidedly react biting the sleeve of the decoy and maintaining, possibly, the hold until the end of the exercise. During this action the dog does not have to be hit in any way, but only threatened. The dog that does not succeed in maintaining a constant hold of the sleeve for the entire duration of the exercise – unless due to apparent shyness - must however uninterruptedly maintain a decidedly aggressive attitude toward the decoy. The test ends on indication of the steward which, in estimating it, does not have to hold in account the length of the attack, and that it is not needlessly prolonged, but above what is taken into consideration is the decision and reaction readiness of the dog when confronted with the threat. The dog that shows fear, the total lack of aggressiveness and sleeve hold, indifference, are always considered highly negative factors.

COMMANDS:
"Attack" - "Stop" (optional)

WAT 3

These exercises are for testing of the Corso so one can determine the specific characteristics of the breed that set apart the more qualified subjects for breeding. Minimum age for admission is one year.

Description of exercises/tests
a) The handler enters the ring with the Corso on a leash and addresses the judge. Always with the Corso on the leash, he walks or runs at the direction of the judge; the Corso will then be let loose and three shots from a pistol will be fired immediately. The Corso shall not show any fear at the shot, nor react with excessive aggression. Curiosity and interest is well accepted

b) The handler enters the ring behind the Corso with a stranger holding him by the leash while the handler distances himself about 30-40 paces. Upon orders from the judge, the Corso responds as he is being attacked by an aggressor who appears from a hidden spot. At this point, the Corso is let loose by the stranger and runs to defend the handler while attacking the aggressor, holding onto his sleeve even if he is struck 2 or 3 times by a stick.

c) Immediately after, the handler restrains the Corso by the collar while the aggressor runs away 40 or 50 paces. At this point the aggressor carries out a lunging attack with only the appearance of hitting with the stick. Also during this test, the Corso must grab onto his sleeve.

There is only one conclusive judgment: “Pass” - “Fail”

If the tests are not successfully passed by the Corso, you cannot retest before waiting one month.   After a second failure you must be waited 6 months from the first trial.

PROTEZIONE PROVA (P.P.)

SCORING FOR EACH LEVEL

Excellent          96 to 100

Very Good     90 to 95

Good               80 to 89

Satisfactory    70 to 79

Faulty             36 to 69

Insufficient        0 to 35

Equipment: Six foot leash with buckle collar or harness.  No other equipment may be on the dog.

PP Level I

OBEDIENCE

Heel on Lead (35 points):  The dog begins the pattern sitting at heel position.  With the command “Heel!” handler and dog move forward approximately 40 paces and then turn around and come back with normal, fast and slow paces.  A right turn is made with a minimum of 15 paces, followed by a right turn for a maximum of 15 paces.  The about turn is made to the left, moving directly into the dog for 7 paces, when the team will halt followed by an additional 7 to 8 paces.  Make a left turn for 15 paces to return to the beginning position, where the exercise is complete.

The team will be penalized if the dog forges ahead, crowds, lags behind or goes wide.  The handler may command the dog to “Heel!” at each change of pace and each pattern.  When the handler halts, the dog should automatically sit straight and square with its front legs even with its handler’s knees.

Heeling Pattern Diagram:

Down in Motion with Recall (15 points):  Beginning from a sit at heel, the team moves forward briskly.  After the team has gone at least 10 paces, the handler commands his dog to “down”.  The dog should stop and down immediately.  Without looking back or hesitating, the handler continues at a normal pace for an additional 20 paces and then turns and faces his dog.  At the evaluator’s signal, the handler recalls his dog.  The dog should come rapidly and sit straight and close in front of its handler.  The dog will lose half the possible points if it stops on the “down” command but fails to lie down.

PROTECTION

Defense of Handler (25 points):  A decoy with a sleeve and flexible stick, whip, or clatter stick waits behind a blind/hideaway or shelter.  The handler proceeds according to the instructions of the evaluator with the dog walking beside the owner in heel position. When the handler and dog are to a distance of around 10 meters from the blind, they are suddenly attacked by the decoy, which, on command of the evaluator, comes out of the hiding place.  Faced by such a threat, the dog must immediately bite the sleeve of the decoy and maintain the hold. During the exercise, the dog will be aggressively threatened with the baton.  After the sleeve is shed, the dog should desire to own the sleeve, but should also maintain an aggressive attitude toward the decoy.   The exercise is considered finished when indicated by the evaluator.  The duration of the attack is not important, rather the promptness of the dog’s reaction to the threat.  Lack of aggressiveness, fear, and indifference, not taking of the sleeve, are considered negative factors.

Use of attack and out commands are permitted.

Frontal Attack (25 points):  The handler and dog will stand at the starting line.  At the direction of the evaluator the handler will turn on the dog as the decoy exits the blind.  The handler will command his dog to attack as the decoy walks towards the dog in a threatening manner.  The dog will be evaluated based on its’ commitment to the bite as well as the grip itself.  The dog will be worked on the sleeve for approximately 5 seconds.  At this time, the handler will regain the lead and the sleeve will be slipped.

PP level II

OBEDIENCE

Healing Off Lead (15 points):  Same as PP Level 1 without a lead.

Long Down (15 points). Beginning from a sit at heel, the team moves forward briskly.  After the team has gone at least 10 paces, the handler commands his dog to “down”.  The dog should stop and down immediately.  Without looking back or hesitating, the handler continues at a normal pace to a location out of the line of vision of the dog.   The handler will remain out of sight for 2 minutes.  At the evaluator’s direction, the handler will return to his dog. The evaluator will then command the handler to release his dog and the exercise is over.

The dog will be penalized 2 points for changing positions and will lose all points if the down is broken.

PROTECTION

Attack with distractions (20 points):  Dog and handler will start the exercise from the starting line.  The decoy will be approximately 25 paces away with a plastic jug containing rocks inside.  On the evaluators command the handler will release the dog.  The dog must engage in the bite and not show signs of avoidance.  The dog will be worked for 3 to 5 seconds.  The handler will walk up and grab the lead and out the dog.  Only 3 commands are allowed to out the dog.

Long bite under gun fire (20 points): Handler will hold his or her dog at the starting line.  The decoy will run out from behind a blind, threaten the team, fire 1 shot, and then retreat to a marked location 45 paces away.  The dog will then be released.  Decoy will then fire 2 more shots as the dog approaches.  The dog must engage in the bite and will be worked for 3 seconds.  The handler must out their dog from the starting line.  (No more than 3 commands.)  The handler may choose to then collect the dog or recall the dog at this time.

CIVIL DEFENSE

Part 1 (15 points): This exercise will begin with the dog and handler at the starting line.  The dog must be on a six foot lead.  Approximately 10 feet away there will be a line, behind which the handler will stand; the handler must not step over this line. A second line will be drawn approximately 6 feet in front of the first line, which the handler will not let the dog cross. These lines are clearly marked for safety purposes. The evaluator will then instruct the handler to step behind the designated line and place his dog on Alert. The evaluator will then signal the decoy, who will be dressed in normal civilian clothing, to begin his approach. The decoy will approach the handler and dog in a threatening fashion, with a loud and threatening tone of voice. The dog should display strong defensive behavior and confidence. The decoy will threaten for approximately 10 seconds, at which time the evaluator will signal the exercise to end.

Part 2 (15 points):  This exercise will begin exactly the same as Part A, except the decoy will wear a bite-suit. Upon threatening the handler from a distance, the decoy will proceed directly toward the handler in an attempt to strike him with the slag stick. The handler will command his dog to ATTACK the moment the decoy has stepped past the first line and the dog must bite before the owner is assaulted. For this exercise, it is required that the handler hold the dog by the collar and release the dog immediately after giving the ATTACK command, letting the slack out of the leash when the decoy crosses the first marker line. The dog must attack immediately, without hesitation for the duration of the fight. The fight shall not exceed 5 seconds in duration or until the evaluator signals the handler to call the dog “out” to return to his side or for the handler to give the
”out and guard” command.

PP Level III

OBEDIENCE

Heeling Off Lead (5 points):  Same as PP Level II

Long Down (10 points): Beginning from a sit at heel, the team moves forward briskly.  After the team has gone at least 10 paces, the handler commands his dog to “down”.  The dog should stop and down immediately.  Without looking back or hesitating, the handler continues at a normal pace to a location out of the line of vision of the dog.   The handler will remain out of sight for 5 minutes.  At the evaluator’s direction, the handler will return to his dog. The evaluator will then command the handler to release his dog and the exercise is over.

The dog will be penalized 2 points for changing positions and will lose all points if the down is broken.

Food Refusal:  (40 points): The dog is thrown 4 pieces of food (meat or cheese cubes) while on a down stay with the handler out of sight. Dog must not eat the food, and if food is "accidentally" thrown into dog’s mouth, he must immediately spit it out.

PROTECTION

Protection Scenario (45 points):  Three different protection exercises will be announced at each event.  The unscripted event helps to ensure the natural reaction of the dog.  The exercise will consist of real life scenarios in protection.  The handler must exercise complete control over the dog at all times.
